Become a Volunteer Usher at Greater Boston Stage Company!

Experience the excitement of live theatre while playing a vital role in our audience’s experience! Volunteering at GBSC is a fun and rewarding way to support the arts, meet new people, and enjoy performances—all while helping our theatre run smoothly.

What Does a Volunteer Usher Do?

As a volunteer usher, you’ll help ensure our patrons have an unforgettable experience. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Greeting and welcoming guests.
  • Assisting with ticket scanning and seating.
  • Distributing programs.
  • Providing directions and answering patron questions.
  • Help create and maintain a safe and enjoyable environment.

Why Volunteer as an Usher?

  • See the Show for Free: Usher volunteers often get the opportunity to watch performances (Depending on seating availability. This is not guaranteed).
  • Be Part of the Action: Get a unique behind-the-scenes perspective on how a theatre operates.
  • Support the Arts: Play a key role in creating a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy.
  • Flexible Commitment: Sign up for shows that fit your schedule—whether it’s one night or every production

Who Can Volunteer?

We welcome any individuals over the age of 14, who are friendly, dependable, and enthusiastic about the arts. No prior ushering experience is required — we will provide all the training you need!

All Volunteers receive:

  • The ability to see the show, if seating permits.
  • A free non-alcoholic beverage during their shift
  • A voucher for 2 tickets to a show for every three shifts volunteered (Student Volunteers earn community service hours instead of tickets).
